High Tech Gadgets for Vacations

Posted on 28 February 2011

We all love things that make our life easier – especially when we are on vacation. These 5 gadgets that will make your vacation much more fun …

My number one gadget to bring on vacation with me is my ebook reader. Before the new restrictions on luggage, and the fees associated with them, it wasn’t such a big deal how many books I wanted to bring with me. Now, it is – but I don’t have to worry about that anymore because I can literally bring thousands of books with me to the beach, on the road trip, or that transatlantic flight. And they weigh less than a pound.

You will want to compare ebook readers to determine which one is the best for you, but my personal recommendation is the white Kindle 3G. Particularly if you will be traveling in foreign countries with no international cell phone service. The 3G will allow you access to email and the web when you might otherwise be unable to connect.

Another thing that I absolutely can’t live without when traveling to a foreign country is a speaking translator gadget. The Franklin Global translator is kind of pricey, but definitely worth it when you are lost in a foreign country.

If you’ve ever been dying to get a drink of water in a place that you are not confident in the quality, you will want to check out the SteriPen Ultraviolet Bacteria and Pathogen Killing Water Wand. Simply put it in a cup of water for about a minute and you have safe to drink potable water.

When camping the Surge is an absolute must. It is a solar-powered battery pack that will charge your iPhone – no electric hook-up needed!

The last travel gadget on my list is something that I never really consider important before a couple of years ago. It is the all important hand held luggage scale. It is more and more expensive to take stuff with you on an airplane, so to avoid over weight fees when you get to the airport to check your bags, bring along a luggage scale.

New York City for Pre-Teens

American Girl Stores

If you are planning a visit to New York City with kids and you have a girl under the age of 12 with you, you might want to add a stop at the American Girl Store to your places to see list. If your daughter has or has always wanted an American Girl Doll, this will be the highlight of her vacation.

There are only a few of these stores throughout the country, so if you have the opportunity to check one out, you definitely should. Even if you don’t plan on buying a doll, your daughter will be sure to enjoy it. The store in New York City is pretty close to Central Park so if your entire family is not interested in seeing this doll heaven, then you can plan on sending them off to the park for an afternoon while you and your daughter check out the store.

Many people wonder how much time they should plan for spending in the store. This depends on the kind of shopper your daughter is. If she loves to browse and see everything, I would say to give it a couple of hours on the schedule. If you think she would also want to eat at the restaurant and take her doll to the hair salon, you should allow for more time. If she isn’t a shopper, but she just wants to see what it is like, then I would allow about an hour to an hour and a half.

If you don’t choose to eat at their restaurant in the store, you might want to go to Ellen’s Stardust Diner in Times Square for lunch or dinner. The waitresses and waiters are wanna-be Broadway stars and they sing while waiting on tables. When we went there after buying our American Girl Doll there were some fabulous girls and guys singing. Our girls really loved this part of the trip too!

If you can’t make it to the New York American Girl Place, here is a list of all of the American Girl Stores throughout the country.

Top 10 Essential Camping Foods

Posted on 27 February 2011

Camping is a great activity regardless of the size of the group. It is easier to do and less stressful if at least a few of the campers are experienced, but even a novice can have a great time if they are prepared. The essentials are food, water and fire. It always helps to have a few good camping recipes but camp meals do not have to be elaborate to be good.

Here is a list of essential foods to bring along.

1. Peanut butter. This is a protein packed food and it does not take more than a spoonful of it to quiet a rumbling tummy. In fact, peanut butter can be hidden in many camping recipes for an added flavor and protein boost.

2. Trail mix. This camping essential is packed with all sorts of good nutrients including fiber to keep you full and chocolate chips for quick energy. But who needs a reason to bring along chocolate?

3. Beef jerky. Protein sources are the most important food for camping trips involving hiking, boating or other physical activities. Jerky can be made from any kind of meat but beef is the most readily available and the cheapest.

4. Tortillas. Bread is always good for quick energy and it does not send you into a blood sugar spiral. Tortillas are ideal for camping because they can be thrown around and fit into small spaces. If they get squished it does not matter because they are already flat.

5. Dried fruit. Dry pineapple chunks, apple slices and banana chips are all good sources of quick energy. A word of caution here: if your body is not used to eating dried fruit, go easy on them. When they enter the intestines, they will absorb all of the water they can reach and can quickly cause diarrhea.

Tips for Cheap Accommodation Abroad

Posted on 15 February 2011

No-one likes to spend a lot more than they must for a typical hotel suite but as well no-one wants to be in a low quality hotel as it can truly put a downer on your holiday. How do you attain the best of the two worlds by saving money on price although staying in someplace fantastic? It’s not easy and so i decided I would write down a few recommendations which have helped me personally to locate cheaper accommodation.

I’ve always thought it was unusual that many of us will alter the month or year they go on holiday to reduce costs although not the time of week. Were you aware that if you book a hotel room for the beginning of the working week you will save about 40% when compared to weekend? When you consider lots of the top places of interest should be much less congested during the week it makes sense to book whenever everyone else isn’t!

The city centre will always be the most expensive area of any locale in which to stay nevertheless what a lots of people don’t realize is the fact that a city centre hotel can certainly save you money. For instance a hotel room away from city will likely be less expensive but your still going to have to spend on cabs into the city and important destinations every day so is it really going to finish up less costly? I was not long ago visiting Ireland and noticed this to be pretty accurate while looking for Dublin hotels, taxi cabs are very pricey.

Several hotels factor in the cost of selected cost-free things to do like an onsite health club or vehicle parking into the overall room rate. That is okay when you are planning to make use of these kinds of services however if not then it’s really a waste of cash. Numerous features these days such as wifi internet access come as standard however try to pay attention to the fundamentals when searching for an affordable hotel. Whenever I’m looking for a hotel the main aspects I think about are area, popularity and cost, anything else is actually a bonus.

There’s far more to locating a cheap hotel than I’ve talked about but hopefully these fundamentals will help next time your lost in a big city.

Some Large Hotel Chains Have Big Rewards

Posted on 11 February 2011

Making a reservation for a hotel can be an incredibly challenging business, especially when you are in a foreign city with very little local knowledge. Also everyone has unique demands when shopping for a resort with anything from price to hotel rating being a consideration. To help below are a few of my main tips that will help you stretch your budget on your next holiday no-matter what city you happen to be visiting.

There are numerous excellent reasons to stay with a large hotel chain like the Hilton or Best Western. The largest reason would be the incentive schemes that many large chains have got set up so if you make numerous bookings with them you can get a free room at the end. Considering that big hotel corporations have locations worldwide there is a lot of incentive to retain your business. Quite a few people feel that branded hotels are invariably more expensive than lesser independent establishments but it’s not always the case, the marketplace for tourists is extremely competitively priced for all hotels. This can be very true with Florida holidays and North America in general.

Secret reservation sites are getting to be much more popular online now despite the vast majority of people going abroad not really recognizing precisely how they work. Basically there are thousands of hotels and guesthouses with empty rooms on any given date. Through listing the room on the mystery rooms web page consumers can bid for the room with just one or two specifics like rating and approximate location to go by. For a few choosing an unknown hotel with so little insight is too daunting however the benefit for those fearless enough can be 50% off the usual price.

Virtually all the large chain hotels have got internet based newsletters where one can receive the most recent updates on their best deals. I am aware many people don’t want junk mail clogging up their email but if you are patient there are numerous excellent offers to be had. The principle is the same as the secret rooms websites where hotels have got a surplus of rooms that they need to offload inexpensively and quickly. I know some people who’ve stayed in five star hotel rooms for half the regular asking price simply by signing up for latest updates.

So those are my personal tricks for finding a more affordable place to stay. I hope you can find the ideal room at the right price tag for you.
